2019 Oscars: Black Panther (97%)

This episode of the podcast covers the highest rated Best Picture nominee from 2018, Ryan Coogler’s MCU entry: Black Panther! The crown jewel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (so far), Black Panther follows the adventures of T’Challa, the newly crowned king of Wakanda – an African nation that is supremely advanced. When a villain named Killmonger appears and seizes control of the nation, T’Challa must unite the various royal factions and regain his kingdom.

Black Panther features the standard MCU tone and structure, but it also spreads its wings by commenting on some real world issues without coming across as preachy or naive. Clay and Wes discuss the MCU’s first Best Picture nomination, and they also break down CGI rhinos, the blandness of Black Panther the hero, and the importance of having a good villain!
