The B-Roll selection for Amy Adams has Wes and Clay watching a film that both of them are unfamiliar with, 2016’s Nocturnal Animals. Directed and written by Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals is the story of an art gallery owner named Susan (Adams) who reads a new novel written by her ex-husband and begins to insert herself and her own perspective into the narrative. As the film switches between reality and the fictional universe of the book, Susan begins to dredge up difficult memories and finds her life crumbling around her.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, Nocturnal Animals is “well-acted and lovely to look at, the film further underscores writer-director Tom Ford’s distinctive visual and narrative skill.” It currently has a critical score of 73% on the site.
In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay return from a long break to a film that is equal measures intricate and disturbing. It’s an arthouse film that does its best to disguise itself as a revenge thriller, and the guys discuss how well the film manages to balance that mix. Plus! The guys discuss inserting your own perspective into something you read, how to turn a supporting character into something special, and why some internet reviews miss the mark!
