58. Creature From the Black Lagoon (#154)

Egads! Did you see that thing in the water? We’re taking you all on a trip this week on the Rotten Horror Picture show, all the way from the molten crusts of prehistory to the sweaty river beds of the Amazon in the 1950’s with the slimy, scaled, classic of cinema shock, The Creature from the Black Lagoon! And Clay and Amanda didn’t just watch it, they watched it in all of its 3D glory!

Remnants of a mysterious animal have come to light in a remote jungle, and a group of scientists intends to determine if the find is an anomaly or evidence of an undiscovered beast. To accomplish their goal, the scientists (Antonio Moreno, Richard Carlson, Richard Denning, Whit Bissell) must brave the most perilous pieces of land South America has to offer. But the terrain is nothing compared to the danger posed by an otherworldly being that endangers their work and their lives.

Join Clay and Amanda as they plummet to the depths of horny monsters (again!), going into unexplored territory…WITH A WOMAN! Multiple mentions of the Devonian age, Mark’s “positive” weapon that’s not compensating for anything, sweaty hunks of shirtless subtext, and a discussion about all things sea monster!

The Creature From the Black Lagoon occupies an interesting space of horror history, as it is well known as one of the classic monsters of the Universal Horror era, but was a film released well after the other heavy hitters like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, or The Wolf Man. A unique monster flick of the 50’s that eschews conventions by making the monster the product of natural evolution, rather than nuclear experimentation, Gillman is a good time, and at 79 minutes, it’ll get you home in time for supper.

So fill up your scuba tanks, get your harpoon ready, set sail for the remote areas of the rainforest, and dive down deep with us…if you dare!
