61. Host (#34)

Hello? Can you hear me? Is my audio coming through? I can hear you but I can’t see you. Go to preferences…no, preferences…no, that’s for audio, you want video. Anyway, we’re all having a big covid-era zoom meet-up this week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show as we dive into the darling of pandemic horror, 2020’s breakout hit, Host!

Six friends accidentally invite the attention of a demonic presence during an online séance and begin noticing strange occurrences in their homes. Host takes place on a screencast of a video call on Zoom, and is presented as a computer screen film. Starring Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova and Caroline Ward, it features a group of friends who attempt to escape a deadly supernatural force inadvertently spawned during a séance.

Join Clay and Amanda as they dial into the meeting room of awkward dad cameos (by the actual dad of one of the actresses!), a trans-dimensional drinking game that is arguably the catalyst for all of the horror and distress that follows, maintaining Covid safety procedures even in the midst of a demonic attack, and a boyfriend who takes hanging around WAY too literally.

Host is our second pandemic-era film we’ve covered on The Rotten Horror Picture Show, and unlike In the Earth, it takes the very specific iconography, and limitations of pandemic lockdown living, and uses it to its advantage to put a very fresh, very timely spin on the found footage genre of horror films. It’s great today but what about in five years–will it still feel as relevant? Only time will tell, but as for right now, it works for us!

So plug in your router, don’t worry about wearing pants, forget to mute when you cough, and buffer into madness with us…if you dare!
