2020 Oscars – Marriage Story (95%)

Wes and Clay wrap up their coverage of the 2020 Academy Awards by watching their B-Roll selection of the Best Picture nominees, “Marriage Story”.

Directed and written by Noah Baumbach, “Marriage Story” stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as a married couple going through a divorce. We, as the audience, arrive just in time to see all the paperwork go down. At first, the couple attempt to split things mutually and without lawyers, but soon enough the plan goes to hell and both sides lawyer up.

As the family splinters from a single unit into a bi-coastal team, the emotions and frustrations on both sides begin to bubble up. As the law steps into the private lives of our characters, we get a glimpse into the machinations that drive divorce proceedings and a look into the hearts of two people who can no longer survive with each other, but also can’t survive without each other. It’s very much like that U2 song!

The Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads: ” Observing a splintering union with compassion and expansive grace, the powerfully acted Marriage Story ranks among writer-director Noah Baumbach’s best works.”

Marriage Story received widespread critical acclaim, with praise drawn towards Baumbach’s screenplay and direction, Randy Newman’s score, and the performances of Johansson, Driver, and Dern. Among its many accolades, the film received six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Driver), and Best Actress (Johansson). It also received a leading six nominations at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, as well as five at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards. For her performance, Dern won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
