39. A Quiet Place II (#60)

This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Amand and Clay head back to the movies–for real! This week’s movie, A Quiet Place Part 2, gave us a great opportunity, not only to get back to the movie theater for the first time in over a year, but to also cover our first movie on the list that is a new release! On the flip side though, it caused a bit of havoc with the standings on our list, but we’ll touch on that a bit later in the show.

Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.

Join Clay and Amanda as they put their ears to the ground over Cillian Murphy’s amazing waterproof paper, a silent-but-deadly Scoot McNary, boat mutants, K-Billy’s Super Sounds of the 70’s, decorative corpses that really bring the room together (in places other than Amanda’s house), and a contentious labeling of questionable parenting!

It’s great to be back at the movies, and it’s great to get to see such a solid pitch down the middle of a sequel, but A Quiet Place Part 2 did make us wonder about its merits as a horror film, and even if it belongs on our list at all! I’d like to think it was an honest discussion not influenced too much by our mild frustration at the shakeup its inclusion on the list has caused, but hey, nobody’s perfect. That being said, it’s a fun flick, and does merit discussion  as a horror film, as NOT a horror film, and as an excuse to take a look at the ever lingering question “can a sequel ever really be as good as the original?”
