34. Sisters (#144)

“Sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters. Never had to have a chaperon, no sir, I’m here to keep my eye on her. Caring, sharing, every little thing that we are wearing, when a certain gentleman arrived from Rome, she wore the dress and I stayed home…” This week on the Rotten Horror Podcast we get into a sibling rivalry most troublesome with Brian De Palma’s Sisters!

Inquisitive journalist Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt) is horrified when she witnesses her neighbor, fashion model Danielle Breton (Margot Kidder), violently murder a man. Panicking, she calls the police. But when the detective arrives at the scene and finds nothing amiss, Grace is forced to take matters into her own hands. Her first move is to recruit private investigator Joseph Larch (Charles Durning), who helps her to uncover a secret about Danielle’s past that has them both seeing double.

Join Clay and Amanda as they separate from the most treacherous living room to cross in all of Staten island (lots of slipping and falling!), the worst threesome ever captured on film, the brooklyn institute of modern investigation’s star pupil, “The African Room,” and questionable (or maybe not so questionable) parenting!

1972’s Sisters brings us an early feature effort from Brian de Palma, and one where all of his influences and proclivities are on display, for better or worse. Hitchcock references – check! Doubling of the self – check! Split screens and split diopter shots – check! All things that, while unrefined here, would come to be defining traits of de Palma’s films as he refined his style and techniques into what they are today, still loved by cult film fans over 40 years later. Add to that a stellar performance from Margot Kidder, and you’ve got one of the more unique films we’ve covered, BUT…is it really a horror movie?

So avoid your date’s crazy husband, drive them back to Staten Island, and buy a birthday cake with us…if you DARE!
