42. The Invitation (#117)

This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Amand and Clay cordially invite you to a very special gathering of friends. Old friends, reuniting after a long two years apart, and new friends, showing up unannounced and bringing a very odd vibe with them. Old or new, they’re all in grave danger as this group of unfortunate souls show up to the party of their lives (and deaths) in The Invitation!

While attending a dinner party at his former house, a man (Logan Marshall-Green) starts to believe that his ex-wife (Tammy Blanchard) and her new husband (Michiel Huisman) have sinister plans for the guests. It’s a beautiful five-course meal of suspense and character intrigue with a digestif of murder and mayhem, all in the name of a mysterious cult with a larger reach than anyone could ever imagine.

Join Clay and Amanda as they tally up all the most heinous party fouls, such as red wine that goes right to your head and shuts down your cardiovascular system, bringing a “new guy” to the party who creeps everyone out, gathering everyone around to “show them a video,” and some debatable questionable parenting!

It’s been a long seven years since Jennifer’s Body, but The Invitation marks Karyn Kusama’s return to the feature film director’s chair. The gloss and flash of a teen monster flick have been traded in for the dark and brooding atmosphere of a taut character drama and show that Kusama is a real talent behind the camera. It’s dark, it’s foreboding, it’s the last dinner party you’d ever want to go to, it’s a very underrated horror/thriller flick, it’s The Invitation!

So dust off your finest dinner jacket, make some awkward small talk, and raise your poisoned glasses with us…if you DARE!
